Although there were similar utensils in classical Greece and the Roman Empire, the holder appeared as such to 1077. He came to Europe from Constantinople in the early eleventh century by Theodora, daughter of the Byzantine Emperor Constantine X Doukas. She took him to Venice to marry Domenico Selvo, Dux of that republic. But Theodora for his contemporaries was crossed out, for this and other refined oriental ways, as outrageous and reprehensible and even San Pedro Damian admonished from the pulpit these extravagances, coming to call "instrumentum diaboli".

As curiosity is possible to add that in addition to using a fork to eat, Catalina used it to scratch her back. Cheesy fame that had this tool did take a back seat to eat with your hands until the eighteenth century.
